THOMAS DITTON, SR. (abt. 1787--1851) Emigrant ancestor from England to Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. The St. Mary, St. Marylebone, Middlesex, England (now London) parish register records his occupation as "servant" at the time of his son Thomas's baptism in 1818. Evidence suggests the family may have left London about 1827 and gone to Brighton in Sussex. There, the Ditton family became part of the Petworth Emigration Scheme sponsored by the Earl of Egremont, a wealthy English philanthropist. With the cooperation of the Anglican Church,"worthy poor" were aided in emigrating and establishing themselves in Canada. The Ditton's sailed on "the British Tar," a small brig carrying 135 passengers, in 1834. This voyage has been described in some detail in No Trifling Matter, by Professor Sheila Haines, a book based on government and church reports as well as letters written by some of the emigrants. The emigrants dispersed to various locations after reaching Canada, the Dittons, with several other families, going to Woodstock, Ontario, where work was readily available. There, a group of retired officers from the British military were establishing "estates" and needed gardeners, carpenters, and mechanics to help maintain them. The voyage took almost seven weeks. Leaving Portsmouth in mid-April, they reached York (Toronto) via Quebec, Montreal, and Kingston, in June, then travelled overland by wagon to Blandford, Oxford County, arriving in late June. Ditton's family had grown larger during the trip from England. One week out to sea, his wife gave birth safely to a daughter. Four of their other children accompanied them on the voyage and had come down with the measles just before the ship sailed. Ditton evidently advanced himself by going to Canada. He became a landowner and voter, neither of which were likely possibilities for him in the England of his day. In Canada, he was described as a yeoman, one who owned the land he farmed. He received a crown deed for property in Woodstock, lot 2 west side, concession 3, in 1844. This property was bordered by Light, Henry, Graham, and Vincent streets. Although in January 1850 he mortgaged 4 acres of land in Woodstock for 25 pounds Canadian, this mortgage was discharged a year later in January 1851, and he was able to leave this property to his family when he died. As a landowner, he had the right to vote, and as a voter of Woodstock he signed a petetion protesting a parliamentary election in 1844. He died in 1851 in Woodstock, Ontario, and was buried July 1, 1851, at Old St. Paul's cemetery, Woodstock. |
