The Putnam County Republican 8 Aug 1903
Last Sunday afternoon an accident occurred in front of the Thompson House, Lake Mahopac, whereby George Karl, compositor, in the Republican office, Carmel, had a narrow escape from serious injuries, if not from death. Accompanied by two young ladies, the Misses Kitty Goodwin and Anna Clark, of New York, guests at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Karl, he drove to Lake Mahopac, with a rig from Geo. Patterson's livery. As they neared the Thompson House, they noticed an automobile standing still in front of it. Just as they were nearly opposite, the chaffer suddenly started it up which frightened the horse so that he shied into the gutter and the wagon struck against the edge of a small bridge throwing Mr. Karl out. The fall stunned him and the reins fell from his hands. Miss Goodwin managed to catch one rein, and the horse whirled, and ran up the hill leading to the Harry Baldwin place, with the young ladies still in the wagon. Men from the Thompson House ran to their aid, stopped the horse and took them into the hotel with Mr. Karl, who regained consciousness and was able after a while to drive home with them, receiving no other injuries than a shaking up.
Indignation ran high among those who witnessed the accident as it seemed as if the chauffeur started the machine up purposely although he disclaimed it. Many who had ordered rigs for that afternoon telephoned to the stables for them not to be sent around until that machine left town. It was a fortunate escape for the young man and young ladies as well, for all might have been killed or injured for life.
It is an open question whether or not a certain class of people should be allowed to take pleasure in a style of locomotion so fraught with danger to the lives of so many others. Greater protective measures will have to be devised for public safety if these machines are to be allowed to run over our highways at will.

In the afternoon Mrs. Karl and daughter, Miss Minnie, attended the wedding of Miss Kittie Goodman, who has been a frequent visitor of theirs in Carmel.

Miss Minne K. Karl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Karl, was an Easter bride. She was married to Thomas E. Cole at the R. C. Rectory at Mahopac by Rev. Father Murray. The ceremony took place at one o'clock. George A. Karl, a brother of the bride, and Miss Josephine Goodman, of New York, a cousin, attended the couple.
After the ceremony the wedding party drove back to Carmel, where a wedding feast awaited them at the bride's home, which was handsomely trimmed for the occasion. The couple took a short trip, leaving on the afternoon train for the city. The platform at the depot was crowded with friends, who were there to give the popular couple a proper sendoff.
Mr. and Mrs. Cole came home Wednesday and are domiciled on the Dean farm at Dean Pond, owned by C. Dudley Allen.

After the fire in 1907 which destroyed the house in which Mr. Karl and his family resided he built a house on lower Gleneida avenue and has since occupied it. His reputation as a barber was well known and he enjoyed a large patronage in this village.
During the many years spent in this village he has made many friends who are grieved to learn of his death and the familyhave the sympathy of the community in their great loss.
The funeral will be held at the St. James Catholic church here Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Father Murray officiating. Interment will be made in the St. Lawrence cemetery in Brewster.

3) Anna Elisabetha DEXHEIMER was born on 11 Sep 1828 in Biebelnheim, Rheinhessen, Hessen. She died Dec 1895 in Detroit Michigan. She married about 1855 to Frederic GRIESER. He was born on 18 Aug 1833 in Germany. He died on 21 Jan 1873 in Detroit, Michigan.
Brewed in Detroit by Peter H. Blum
Germania. The story of the Grieser brewery illustrates the determination to continue in the face of tragedy. Fred Grieser started a home-brewing operation at the northeast corner of Sherman and St. Aubin in 1871. His untimely death two years later left his forty-one-year-old wife Elizabeth with a ten-year-old boy, John. Eliza, as she was known, buckled down and became one of the few women to run a brewery. If she could make a go of it, perhaps John could take his father's place someday.
In 1874, Eliza Greiser's brewery turned out 1,237 barrels, 1,355 the following year. In 1876, she was also operating a saloon as part of the establishment. A relative, Louis Grieser, came to live in the house and helped to brew. Nicholas Grieser, another relative who was a bookkeeper for the Hawley Malt Company, boarded at the home.
Finally, in 1885, twenty-two-year-old John Grieser was ready to take his place in the brewery. The name was changed to Germania Brewing Company in 1888, with John in charge. Nicholas Grieser left Hawley to join the family firm. By 1890, John was married and living at 193 Chestnut with his wife, Ellen. The Germania Brewery was small but provided a livig for the Griesers. In December 1895 Eliza Grieser died at sixty-four. Tragedy struck again in March, when John died suddenly at thirty-three, leaving an even younger widow.
Nicholas Grieser took over as brewmaster. However, time was running out for Germania, and the family closed the brewery in August 1898. The following July, Karl Zahringer and John Honer either purchased or leased the small plant and resumed production. brewing operaiton shut down permanently in 1900.
[Note: "relatives" Louis and Nicholas actually were sons of Elizabeth, brothers of John]. |

EXPLOSION DEATH ROLL WILL NOT EXCEED ONE
Sacramento, April 30. - Attendants at the Southern Pacific railroad hospital today report that the condition of George W. Elliott and Andrew Johnson, helpers in the shops who were injured yesterday afternoon by the explosion of an acetylene gas tank, is more incouraging than last night. While both are seriously injured, neither is in a critical condition.
Fears that Elliott would lose his hearing, as a result of the concussion, were set at rest today by physicians after an examination.
Johnson is more seriously hurt. His body is a mass of bruises and cuts and he may be left partly blind and deaf.
Southern Pacific officials are investigating to determine the cause of the explosion which resulted in the death of Otto Harmson and injured three others.
