The Harms of Elverta & Washington, California.

  Charles HARMS' death notice states he was a native of Province Hanover, Germany, aged 55 years, 5 months.  That puts his birth at 11 June 1830.  According to a family story he came to America to avoid the mandatory term of service in the Landwehr (the German army).  That would put him in The U. S. in the late 1840's, early 1850's.  On 10 Oct 1848 Charles HARMS and his older sister Dorothea HARMS arrived on the ship Bark Leda in Baltimore, Maryland. Charles was 18 years old and Dorothea was 21 years old. The Port of Departure was Bremen, Germany.

I do not know if Charles THIELE is related to Charles and Dorthea. I Can't find anything on Orrlebsen, it could have been an old neighborhood of Hanover or it may be a misspelling of Adelebsen a municipality in the district of Göttingen, in Lower Saxony.  Charles older brother Freiderich states Adelebsen as his last address.

 By 1849 Dorothea and probably Charles were in St. Louis, Missouri. There Dorothea married Adam BENGERT on 25 Dec 1849 (I have no more information on them). Charles older brother Henry HARMS was also in St. Louise at that time. George STEINMILLER and Elizabeth Louisa BURKARD married 27 Sep 1849 in St. Louis, Missouri. Sometime after that, Charles, Henry and family, and The STEINMILLERS started off to California. Henry HARMS and family were in Sacramento by the taking of the 1852 California Census. The STEINMILLERS were in Nevada 15 May 1852 (the birth of son Louis Henry STEINMILLER). By 6 Apr 1854 (birth of daughter Emma STEINMILLER) the STEINMILLER’s were living in Sacramento county. On 23 Jul 1856 in Elverta, Sacramento County, California, George STEINMILLER died. Cause of death "eruption". He was 32 years old and left behind a widow and three children (the youngest Louisa was born 4 Jan 1856 in Elverta). By 1860, Henry HARMS had located to Yolo County, California.
  On 21 Jun 1857 in Sacramento, California Charles HARMS and Elizabeth Louisa BURKARD STEINMILLER were married. Sometime in 1858/59 Charles and Elizabeth had a daughter who died 15 Apr 1861 in Elverta. Their daughter Dora HARMS was born on 14 Jun 1861 in Elverta, California.
  Elizabeth Louisa BURKARD STEINMILLER HARMS was born 4 Mar 1826 in Germany and died 4 Jun 1867 of "parturition" in Elverta, California. I assume the child was stillborn; there is no information on it. Dora HARMS died 27 Aug 1868 in Elverta, California. The cause of death was her petticoats or nighty caught on fire & she was burned to death.

On 14 Nov 1869 in Sacramento California Charles married 34 year old Anna Magdalena "Lena" DEXHIEMER. She was born 21 Feb1835 in Biebelnheim, Rheinhessen, Hessen, Germany. Her parents were Peter DEXHIEMER & Anna Magdalena SPIES. One family story is that Lena was a Mail-Order Bride. What I do know is Lena and her younger sister Phillippina came to California around 1861-1866 via New York where their father and many siblings remained. Phillippina married about 1866 to John William HARMSON who lived in Sacramento. According to the 1870 Census, the three STEINMILLER children stayed with the HARMS instead of going to their Grandfather's or Uncles' houses who were near by. By 1870 Charles' oldrer brother Friedrich and cousin Karl were in Yolo County. Lena had her first child on 23 Feb 1871 at the age of 37 years. She had her seventh and last child on 14 Aug 1882 at the age of 47 years. By 1880 all three of the STEINMILLER children were married. Emma was the only one who stayed in Elverta. She married Frederick V. STRAUCH who had a farm near the HARMS' farm. More on the STEANMILLERS here.   On 11 Nov 1885 Charles HARMS died of "icterus"  in Elverta, Sacramento, California. His death notice states "St. Louis, Mo. papers please copy." I assume his sister Dora and husband stayed in Missouri. There may have been other siblings and cousins also living there. Lena never remarried. Lena Dexheimer HARMS died on 1 Nov 1924 in Sacramento County, California of “valvular heart lesion." She was 89 years old. She was buried in the HARMS plot at the Sacramento City Cemetery.

3] ] Elisabeth HARMS was born on 22 Sep 1873. She died on 20 Jul 1946 in San Mateo, California.  She married on 20 Jul 1901 in Sacramento County, California to Charles Edwin STAHL. He was born on 7 Apr 1869 in Pennsylvania. He died on 8 Apr 1948 in San Mateo County, California. The SRAHLs moved to South San Francisco after they married.
They had Three children born in San Mateo County, California.

  3a) Alma M STAHL born 28 Mar 1903 in California, She died10 Apr 1992 in Santa Cruz County, California. She married Charles John LEDWITH. He was born 15 Jun 1901 and died 27 May 1955 in San Mateo County, California.
Have Post cards from Alma to her cousin, Helena NICOLAUS, from the early 1900's.
They had four children born in San Mateo County, California.

3b) Raymond STAHL born 24 Nov 1906 & he died sometime before 1910.

3c) Orianna Elisabeth STAHL born16 May 1913. She died 23 Dec 1992 in Santa Cruz County, California. She married Harold Hugh ANSLEY.  .  He was born 17 Sep 1895 in Hudson, St Croix, Wisconsin. He died 26 Jul 1980 in Santa Cruz County, California. They had two known children.

4] Anna HARMS was born on18 Dec 1874. She died on 14 Apr 1941 at the Napa State Hospital, Napa County, California.  Cause of death was Chronic Myocarditis due to General Arteriosclerosis and Psychosis Cerebral Arteriosclerosis. She married on16 Jan 1894 in Sacramento County, California to Carlyle WAIT.  He was born on 13 Jan 1868 in Boone County, Iowa.  He died on 25 Aug 1946 in Sacramento County, California.  His family had a farm near the HARMS farm. more info. on the Wait family of Elverta, CA.

  They had seven children:
4a) Albert Elwood WAITE was born 26 May 1894. He died on 31 Aug 1953 in Sacramento County California. He married on Jun 1918 at Camp Lewis, Pierce, Washington to Lois LA FORGE. They had a son.

4b) Alvin Lloyd WAIT was born 2 Feb 1895. He died 26 Jul 1973 in Sacramento County, California.  He married 1st. on 15 Dec 1922 in Sacramento County, California to Mary E. FLYNN.  They divorced before 1940. He married 2d to 18 Jan 1945 in Los Angeles County, California to Laura Maye BROWN. She was born 9 Oct 1905 in El Dorado County, California. She died 15 Jul 1978 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California.  Laura and Helena NICOLAUS PASCOE CAPPS were friends. When Helena moved back to Sacramento in the 1980’s she lived with Laura for a while.   

4c) Leland Chester WAITE born on 28 Jan 1898. He died 19 Oct 1957 in Sacramento County, California. He married 31 Jul 1926 in Solano County, California to Mildred Ruth RUNQUIEST.  She was born on 10 Oct 1903 in Minnehaha, South Dakota.She died 22 May 1995 in Sacramento County, California. One known son: 4c1) Donald Calvin WAITE was born on 27 Dec 1927 in Sacramento County, California.  He died on 12 Jun 1990 in Contra Costa, California. He married in 1950 in Alameda County.

4d) Mildred C. WAIT born on 21 Sep 1899.  She died on 24 Jan 1965 in Sacramento County, California. She married 1922 in Sacramento County, California to Albert Minor CARTER.  He was born on 25 Feb 1898 in Oklahoma.  He died 11 Jul 1956 in Sacramento County, California. They had a daughter:     4d1) Lois Jean CARTER born16 Apr 1923 in Sacramento County, California. She died on 10 Feb 2002 in Winters, Yolo, California. She married in 1944.

 4e) Clifford WAIT was born about 1901 & died before 1910.  

4f) Kenneth Oliver WAIT was born on 28 Sep 1905. He died on 11 Jan 1993 in Roseville, Placer, California. He married Early 1930 in Sacramento County, California to Emma Ida GROLLA. She was born on 27 Mar 1910 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. She died on 12 Nov 1999 in Roseville, Placer, California. They had one daughter.

4g) Lawrence Alden WAIT born 12 Jan 1909. He died 20 Nov 1965 in Sacramento County, California. He married 28 May 1928 in Roseville, Placer, California to Alice Carrie DAVIS. She was born 27 Jun 1906 in Glencoe, Belmont, Ohio. She died 1 Jan 1990 in Sacramento County, California. They had a daughter

6] Sophia L. HARMS born 24 Dec 1878. She died 7 Mar 1966 in Sacramento, California. She married 30 Jun 1900 in Sacramento, California to Frederick William DOSCH.  He was born15 Mar 1873 in Sacramento, California. He died14 Sep 1927 in Sacramento, California.

They had eight children all born in the City of Sacramento, California:

6a) John Edward DOSCH born12 Jan 1901. He died 24 Jul 1952 in Sacramento, California. Never married.

6b) Frederick E DOSCH born 27 Dec 1902. He died 1 Jun 1977 Sacramento, California. He married Viola Dugan PENTER. She was born 5 Oct 1907 in California. She died 8 Jun 1978 in Sacramento, California. They had two children.

6c) Bernice E. DOSCH born 30 Oct 1904 in Sacramento, California. She died 25 Jun 1969 in San Francisco, California. She married Alf Clarence ANDERSON. He was born 24 Feb 1898 in Sacramento County, California. He died on 6 May 1988 in Sacramento County, California. They had two children.

6d) Frank Henry DOSCH born 24 Dec 1909. He died 14 Jul 1986 in Sacramento County, California. He married 1927 to Ella SWEANEY. She was born on 9 Jul 1911 in California; She died on 7 Nov 1995 Sacramento County, California. They had two children.

6f) Elwood "Cap" DOSCH born 19 Feb 1916. He died on 8 Aug 1968 in San Francisco California. Never married.

6g) Dorothy A. DOSCH born 23 Oct 1922. She died 19 Nov 2012 in Sacramento, California. She married 2 Sep 1941 in Reno, Washoe, Nevada to Elmer J TOWNSEND He was born 19 Feb 1918 in Montana. He died 13 Oct 2007 in Sacramento, California. they had a son.

6h) Living DOSCH.

7] Phillipina HARMS was born on 14 Aug 1882. She died on 14 Jun 1930 in Sacramento, California. She married on 24 May 1902 in Sacramento, California to Francis Miron POOLE. He was born on 29 Jun 1874 in Missouri. He died on 20 Feb 1952 in Sacramento, California.
They had one child Leland Frances POOLE. He was born on 6 Aug 1911 in Sacramento, California. He died on 21 Jan 1963 in San Francisco, California. He married Clara after 1931 and they divorced before 1939.

	All the HARMS (sometimes spelled HARMES) below lived at sometime at "The Chicory Ranch" in Yolo County, California. Yolo County Place Names - Past and Present has Chicory Bend located in the East central portion of Yolo County on the Sacramento River, South of Washington. Henry A E and Frederick HARMS are the older brothers of Charles HARMS of Elverta. Karl HARMS was a brother-in-law to Henry’s 2nd wife. He may also be a cousin of the HARMS brothers. 1] Heinrich HARMS departed Bremen in May of 1847 on the Ship George Washington, they arrived on 9 Jun 1847 in Baltimore, Maryland. Name:                Age:                 Last Residence: Adelepsa                     Occupation:   Packages:

I haven’t been able to locate Adelepsa. I’m guessing it’s a misspelling of Adelebsen a municipality in the district of Göttingen, in Lower Saxony.  Henry is on page 107 of the 1848 St. Louis, Missouri directory. HARMS Henry, saddler, Mullanphy near Lewis. By 1849 Henry’s sister Dorothea and younger brother Charles are in St. Louis, Missouri. Dorothea married Adam BENGERT on 25 Dec 1849. (I have no more information on them). I don’t know when Henry’s wife Dorothy and any children they may have had, came to the US. Henry and family are in California by the time of the 1852 California Census. In 1860, Henry and Adolph C PALM, established a chicory manufacturing plant. In 1882, PALM sold out. Adolph C PALM’s 2nd wife was Lizzie THIELEBEULE. Don’t know if or how she’s related to Anna & Doretta THIELEBEULE. Henry was Naturalized before a Judge and Clerk on 16 Jul 1866 in Washington, Yolo, California. Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 25, Number 3821, 20 June 1863

Henry A &/or E HARMS born 29 Oct 1820 in Hanover Germany.  He died on 13 Aug 1890 in Washington, Yolo, California. Cause of death "syncope." He married 1st Dorothy. She was born on 10 May 1822 in Hanover Germany. She died on 6 Nov 1870 at the Chicory Ranch in Yolo County, California. Cause of death "paralysis." Henry married 2nd about 1871 to Anna THIELEBEULE.  She was born in May of 1844 in Germany.  She died on 1 May 1915 in Sacramento, California.  Cause of death "mitral incompetence of heart." Anna is the younger sister of Doretta, wife of Karl HARMS.  They all came to California (and maybe the U. S.) about 1871. Anna married 2nd on 7 Mar 1895 in Yolo County to Michael KAYSER. They were divorced by 1900.
  Henry’s will states that everything should go to his wife Anna, if she dies his nephew Fritz should be put in charge and everything should go to the children of his deceased brothers Charles and Frederick.  In Anna’s Will, she left money and belongings to Karl's and Charles' children but nothing to Frederick's children. Anna also stated that she wanted her name on her tombstone to be HARMS not KAYSER.  Also the HARMS’ plot should be cemented over.

1b) Lena/Rosena HARMS born about 1849 in Missouri or Illinois. Died before1890. Information from 1852 California Census & 1860 US Census.
1c) Frederick HARMS.  He was born about 1861 in California. He died 15 Mar 1873 in Sacramento, California.

2] Frederich (31) HARMS along with his wife Charlotte (33) and son Johann (6m - must be Wm M - don't know where Ernest is), arrived at the port of New York on 28 Aug 1857 on the Ship President Smidt. Their place of origin is Adelebsen same as his brother Charles & sister Dora.

Frederich HARMS born 22 Jan 1826 in Hanover Germany. He died on 14 Mar 1873 in Sacramento, California. Cause of death "peritonititis." According to a news article he was kicked in the stomach by a horse while working on a farm in Elverta. He married Charlotte sometime in Germany. She was born about 1824 in Hanover Germany. She died before 1870 in Yolo County, California. They had three children:

2b) William Melford HARMS born 6 Mar 1857, Hanover Germany.  He died 14 Apr 1912 in California. He married 18 Jan 1884 at the Chicory Ranch in Yolo County, California to Caroline "Carrie" SCHAPER. She was born on 20 Jan 1860 in California. She died on 14 jun 1939 in California.
According to California Voters Register: HARMS, William Milfred was 35 years old 5 foot 7 inches tall. He had a Light complexion, Blue eyes, & Brown hair. He was a Farmer born in Germany, he lived in S Washington. William and Carrie had seven children all born in Yolo and Sacramento area:

He was born 1 Jan 1889 in Yolo County, California. He died 4 Jan 1951 in Sacramento County, California. They had ten children born in Yolo County California.

2b3) Lillian G HARMS born 1Feb 1889 in California. She died 25 Jul 1972 in Sacranento County, California. She married 1st Nov 1911 in California to Vernon Roy VALENTINE. He was born 30 May 1881 on California. He died 21 Oct 1918 in Yolo County, California. Lily married 2nd 15 Aug 1922 in Yolo County, California to George Edward DUTTON. They were devorced before 1940.

2b4) William Frederick HARMS born 5 Jul 1891 in California.  He died 6 Oct 1979 in Broderick, Yolo, California. He married Jan 1916 to Annie Laurie WILLIAMS (daughter of Josiah WILLIAMS and Elizabeth Mary ATKINSON). She died in Aug of 1979 in Broderick, Yolo, California. They had a son William Frederick born 2 Aug 1917 in Yolo County. He never married.

2b5) Clarence HARMS born 3 Aug 1893 in Broderick, Yolo, California. He died 17 Jan 1977 in West Sacramento, California. He married between 1920-1930 to Mary Elizabeth PACHECO-SOUSA. She was born 2 Dec 1890 in Oakland, Alameda, California. She died 8 May 1976 in West Sacramento, Yolo, California. She had three daughters from a previous marriage.

2b6) Ellen Eliza HARMS born 27 Oct 1895 in California. She died 21 Nov 1970 in Sacramento County, California. She married 1st 3 Feb 1914 in San Fransisco, California to Frederick Ernest DOTSON. He was born 24 Mar 1893 in Ohio. He died 9 Mar 1943 in San Francisco. They had four children:
  2b6a) Lester Frederick DOTSON born 18 Oct 1919 in Yolo County, California (CDI has mother as MARCH). He died 24 May 2007 in California. He married Agnes Magdalena MURRAY. She was born 1 Aug 1920 in Sacramento, California. She died 23 Nov 1978 in Sacramento, California. They had two children born in Sacramento County, California.
  2b6b) Ernest E DOTSON born 17 Jan 1922. He died 12 Sep 2011 in California. He married Jane.
  2b6c) Virginia Ellen DOTSON born and died 13 Jul 1927.
  2b6d) Boy DOTSON born and died 3 Dec 1928.
Ellen married 2nd William Leslie STEELE born 16 Apr in Indina. He died 6 Jun 1963 in Sacramento County, California.

2b7) Alice HARMS born 1 Oct 1899 in California, She died on 18 Dec 1988 in Sacramento County, California. She married Paul DUPZYK. They had three children:
  2b7a) Dorothy J DUPZYK born 16 Jun 1920 in San Francisco, California. She married Jun 1940 to Leo J FOLENA. They had two children born in Sacramento County.
  2b7b) Milford Paul DUPZYK born 15 or 22 May 1922 in Broderick, Yolo, California. He died 20 Oct 2015 in West Sacramento, Yolo, California. He married 19 Apr 1947 in Sacramento County to Marian Lee WOOD. She was born 1 Aug 1925 in Sacramento County. She died 18 Nov 1977 in Sacramento County. Two daughters born in Sacramento County.
  2b7c) Stanley Vernon DUPZYK born 10 Nov 1926. He died 30 Oct 2009 in West Sacramento, Yolo, California. He married.

2c)  Fritz HARMS was born about 1866 in Sacramento County or Yolo County, California. After the death of his Father he was living with his Uncle Henry HARMS. He died of Lepersy about 15 Apr 1891 in Washington, Yolo, Califotnia. According to a news article from 1890, Fritz supposably "contracted the disease in a mild form while working with the Chinaman on his father's hop farm near Sacramento." The "Chinaman" also had Lepersy. Other articles tell of how he is a burdon to his family and society. It is very sad, no hospital would take him in. He was put on an island in Yolo and left to die. I really would like to find where he was buried. The last clue is that his body was sent to Sacramento.
