The Harms of Elverta & Washington, California.

 On 10 Oct 1848 Charles HARMS and his older sister Dorothea HARMS arrived on the ship Bark Leda in Baltimore, Maryland. Charles was 18 years old and Dorothea was 21 years old. The Port of Departure was Bremen, Germany.

I do not know if Charles THIELE is related to Charles and Dorothea, but two HARMS men married THIELEBEULE sisters. I Can't find anything on Orrlebsen, it could have been an old neighborhood of Hanover or it may be a misspelling of Adelebsen a municipality in the district of Göttingen, in Lower Saxony.  Charles older brother Freiderich states Adelebsen as his last address.

 By 1849 Dorothea and probably Charles were in St. Louis, Missouri,along with their older brother Henry. There Dorothea married Adam BENGERT on 25 Dec 1849. I have no other informaton on them other than that they had at least one child who was un-named in Henry HARMS' Will.

George STEINMILLER and Elizabeth Louisa BURKARD married 27 Sep 1849 in St. Louis, Missouri. Sometime after that, Charles, Henry and the STEINMILLERS started off to California. The STEINMILLERS were in Nevada 15 May 1852 (the birth of son Louis Henry STEINMILLER). By 6 Apr 1854 (birth of daughter Emma STEINMILLER) the STEINMILLER’s were living in Sacramento county. On 23 Jul 1856 in Elverta, Sacramento County, California, George STEINMILLER died. Cause of death "eruption". He was 32 years old and left behind a widow and three children (the youngest Louisa was born 4 Jan 1856 in Elverta).

Charles HARMS was born 11 June 1830 in Adelebsen, Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany. According to a family story he came to America to avoid the mandatory term of service in the Landwehr (the German army). On 21 Jun 1857 in Sacramento, California Charles HARMS married the Widow Elizabeth Louisa BURKARD STEINMILLER. Charles and Elizabeth first child was stillborn on 26 Oct 1858 in Elverta. They also had a daughter who was stillborn 15 Apr 1861. Their daughter Dora HARMS was born on 14 Jun 1861.   Elizabeth Louisa BURKARD STEINMILLER HARMS was born 4 Mar 1826 in Germany. She died on 4 Jun 1867 of "parturition" in Elverta, California. Dora HARMS died 27 Aug 1868 in Yolo County, California, at her Uncle Henry Harms' Chicory Ranch. The cause of death was her petticoats or nighty caught on fire & she was burned to death. On 14 Nov 1869 in Sacramento Charles married 31 year old Anna Magdalena "Lena" DEXHIEMER. She was born 21 Feb 1838 in Biebelnheim, Rheinhessen, Hessen, Germany. Her parents were Peter DEXHIEMER and Anna Magdalena SPIES. One family story is that Lena was a Mail-Order Bride. What I do know is Lena and her younger sister Phillippina came to California around 1861-1866 via New York where their father and many siblings remained. Phillippina married about 1866 to John William HARMSON who lived in Sacramento. more on that family here. According to the 1870 Census, the three STEINMILLER children stayed with their stepfather Charles and Lena instead of going to their Grandfather's or Uncles' houses who were near by. By 1870 Charles' oldrer brother Friedrich and cousin Karl were in Yolo County, with older brother Henry. Lena had her first child on 23 Feb 1871 at the age of 33 years. She had her seventh and last child on 14 Aug 1882 at the age of 44 years. By 1880 all three of the STEINMILLER children were married. Emma STEINMILLER was the only one who stayed in Elverta. She married Frederick V. STRAUCH who had a farm near the HARMS' farm. More on the STEANMILLERs here. And the STRAUCHs here.   On 11 Nov 1885 Charles HARMS died of "icterus"  in Elverta, Sacramento. His death notice states "St. Louis, Mo. papers please copy." I assume his sister Dorothea and husband stayed in Missouri. There may have been other siblings and cousins also living there. Lena never remarried after Charles death and she died on 1 Nov 1924 in Sacramento County of “valvular heart lesion." She was 86 years old. 3] ] Elisabeth HARMS was born on 22 Sep 1873. She died on 20 Jul 1946 in San Mateo, California.  She married on 20 Jul 1901 in Sacramento County, California to Charles Edwin STAHL. He was born on 7 Apr 1869 in Pennsylvania. He died on 8 Apr 1948 in San Mateo County, California. The STAHLs moved to South San Francisco after they married.
They had Three children born in San Mateo County, California.

  3a) Alma M STAHL born 28 Mar 1903 in California, She died10 Apr 1992 in Santa Cruz County, California. She married Charles John LEDWITH. He was born 15 Jun 1901 and died 27 May 1955 in San Mateo County, California.
Alma and Charles had at least four children:
3a1) Charles Homer LEDWITH was born 21 APR 1924 in San Mateo County. He died 22 Jun 1983 in Santa Clara County. He married 8 Apr 1951 in San Francisco to Robyn Jean HASTY. They had at least four children.
3a2) Raymond Paul LEDWITH was born 1 Sep 1825 in San Mateo County. He died 15 May 2020 in San Jose, California. He married first about 1953 to Monica Marie JONES. She was born 26 Jan 1929 in Iowa. She died 20 Apr 1973 in Santa Clara County. They had at least five children. Raymond married second 11 May 1974 in Santa Clara County to Jolene Catherine GETMAN. They had at least one child together.
3a3) Desnelda Oriana LEDWITH was born 28 Nov 1928 in San Mateo County. She died 8 Mar 2020 in Santa Cruz County. She married first 4 Dec 1948 in San Francisco County to Norman Jack WHITAKER. They had at least three children, then divorced 9 Dec 1982 in Santa Clara County.Desnelda then married Louis Garcia.
3a4) girl LEDWITH was stillborn 22 Sep 1931 San Mateo County.

3b) Raymond STAHL born 24 Nov 1906 & he died sometime before 1910.

3c) Orianna Elisabeth STAHL born16 May 1913. She died 23 Dec 1992 in Santa Cruz County, California. She married Feb 1936 to Harold Hugh ANSLEY. He was born 17 Sep 1895 in Hudson, St Croix, Wisconsin. He died 26 Jul 1980 in Santa Cruz County, California. They had two known children.

4] Anna HARMS was born on18 Dec 1874. She died on 14 Apr 1941 at the Napa State Hospital, Napa County, California.  Cause of death was Chronic Myocarditis due to General Arteriosclerosis and Psychosis Cerebral Arteriosclerosis Onset six years. She married on16 Jan 1894 in Sacramento County, California to Carlyle WAIT.  He was born on 13 Jan 1868 in Boone County, Iowa.  He died on 25 Aug 1946 in Sacramento County, California.  His family had a farm near the HARMS farm. more info. on the Wait family of Elverta, CA.
Annie and Carlyle had at least seven children all born in Elverta:
4a) Albert Elwood WAITE was born 26 May 1894. He died on 31 Aug 1953 in Sacramento County California. He married on Jun 1918 at Camp Lewis, Pierce, Washington to Lois Gertrude LA FORGE. She was born 15 Aug 1892 in Wadsworth, Washoe, Nevada. She died 14 Feb 1964 in Sacramento County. They had at least one son: 4a1)James Elwood WAITE was born 2 Feb 1920 and he died 5 Aug 1985 in Sacramento County. He married 18 May 1943 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri to Wanda Avis Olsen, She was born 28 Sep 1921 in Kensett, Worth, Iowa. She died 5 Oct 2002 in Sacramento County. They had at least three children.

4b) Alvin Lloyd WAIT was born 2 Feb 1895. He died 26 Jul 1973 in Sacramento County.  He married first on 15 Dec 1922 in Sacramento County to Mary E. FLYNN.  They divorced before 1940. He married second to 18 Jan 1945 in Los Angeles County to Laura Maye BROWN. She was born 9 Oct 1905 in El Dorado County. She died 15 Jul 1978 in San Jose, Santa Clara.

4c) Leland Chester WAITE born on 28 Jan 1898. He died 19 Oct 1957 in Sacramento County. He married 31 Jul 1926 in Solano County to Mildred Ruth RUNQUIEST.  She was born on 10 Oct 1903 in Minnehaha, South Dakota. She died 22 May 1995 in Sacramento County. One known son:
4c1) Donald Calvin WAITE was born on 27 Dec 1927 in Sacramento County. He died on 12 Jun 1990 in Contra Costa County. He married on 28 Jan 1950 in Alameda County.

4d) Mildred E. WAIT born on 21 Sep 1899. She died on 24 Jan 1965 in Sacramento County. She married 25 Feb 1922 in Sacramento County to Albert Minor CARTER. He was born on 25 Feb 1898 in Oklahoma. He died 11 Jul 1956 in Sacramento County. They had a daughter:
4d1) Lois Jean CARTER born 16 Apr 1923 in Sacramento County. She died on 10 Feb 2002 in Winters, Yolo, California. She married 8 Feb 1944 in La Junta, Colorado to Joseph C Singleton. He was born 5 Aug 1923 in Sacramento County. He died 12 Jan 2014 in Winters. They had at least two children.

 4e) Clifford WAIT was born 25 Sep 1901 and he died 28 Sep 1905 in Elverta.  

4f) Kenneth Oliver WAIT was born on 28 Sep 1905. He died on 11 Jan 1993 in Roseville, Placer, California. He married 19 Jan 1930 in Sacramento County, California to Emma Ida GROLLA. She was born on 27 Mar 1910 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. She died on 12 Nov 1999 in Roseville. They had one daughter.

4g) Lawrence Alden WAIT born 12 Jan 1909. He died 20 Nov 1965 in Sacramento County, California. He married 28 May 1928 in Roseville, Placer, California to Alice Carrie DAVIS. She was born 27 Jun 1906 in Glencoe, Belmont, Ohio. She died 1 Jan 1990 in Sacramento County. They had a daughter.

6] Sophia L. HARMS born 24 Dec 1878. She died 7 Mar 1966 in Sacramento, California. She married 30 Jun 1900 in Sacramento to Frederick William DOSCH.  He was born15 Mar 1873 in Sacramento. He died14 Sep 1927 in Sacramento.

They had at least eight children all born in the City of Sacramento, California:

6a) John Edward DOSCH was born12 Jan 1901. He died 24 Jul 1952 in Sacramento. He never married.

6b) Frederick Emil DOSCH was born 27 Dec 1902. He died 1 Jun 1977 Sacramento. He married 8 Nov 1927 in Lodi, San Joaquin, California to Viola Dugan PENTER. She was born 5 Oct 1907 in California. She died 8 Jun 1978 in Sacramento. They had at least two children.

6c) Bernice Eleanor DOSCH was born 30 Oct 1904. She died 25 Jun 1969 in San Francisco. She married Alf Clarence ANDERSON. He was born 24 Feb 1898 in Sacramento County. He died on 6 May 1988 in Sacramento County. They had at least two children:

6d) Frank Henry DOSCH was born 24 Dec 1909. He died 14 Jul 1986 in Sacramento. He married 1927 to Ella SWEANEY. She was born on 9 Jul 1911 in California; She died on 7 Nov 1995 Sacramento County. They had two children.

6e) Evelyn Catherine DOSCH was born 7 Jun 1913. She died 6 oct 1949 in Alameda County, California. She married 2 Jun 1936 in San Francisco to Malcolm Lawson DAKIN. He was born 16 Oct 1905 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He died 3 Feb 1974 in Napa County, California.

6f) Elwood Leland "Cap" DOSCH was born 19 Feb 1916. He died on 8 Aug 1968 in San Francisco. For reasons only known to him, he was going by Elwood Thomas Dosch while he was traveling in Brazil in 1952. He never married.

6g) Dorothy Ann DOSCH was born 23 Oct 1922 and she died 19 Nov 2012 in Sacramento. She married 2 Sep 1941 in Reno, Washoe, Nevada to Elmer Julian TOWNSEND He was born 19 Feb 1918 in Montana. He died 13 Oct 2007 in Sacramento, California. they had a son.

6h) Melvin Leroy DOSCH was born 27 May 1925. He died 16 Jan 2021 in Texas. He married and had children.

2] Frederich HARMS (aged 31) along with his wife Charlotte (aged 33) and son Johann (6m - must be Wm M - don't know where Ernest is), arrived at the port of New York on 28 Aug 1857 on the Ship President Smidt. Frederich's ocupation was smith. Their place of origin is Adelebsen same as his brothers Henry & Charles & sister Dora. Frederich HARMS was born 22 Jan 1826 in Adelebsen, Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany. He died on 14 Mar 1873 in Sacramento, California. He married Charlotte Soluta about 1846 in Germany. She was born about 1824 in Hanover Germany. She died 3 Jan 1867 in Babel's Slough, Yolo County. 2a)  Ernest August HARMS was born about 1847 in Adelebsen.  He died on 15 Apr1910 in Sacramento, California. Cause of death "chr alcoholism." He married on 6 Apr 1877 in Sacramento County to Ada J. Van TASSELL. She was born Feb 1860 in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. She died 4 Sep 1910 near Antelope, Sacramento, California. Cause of death "pulmonary tb." Ernest and Ada divorced June 1893.  According to California Voters Register -HARMS, Ernest August was 43 years old, he was 5 foot 6 inches tall. He had a Dark complexion, Brown eyes & Black hair. He was a Farmer born in California, he lived in West Davisville. According to newspaper articles, Ernest's body was found in an old shed in an alley behind the Perry seminary on I street, between Tenth and Eleventh streets. Below are the two WWI Registration Cards for Erenest Rolland Harms. The first one (6-5-17) he is in Los Angeles and married with a step son. The second one (Sep 18 1918) he is in Sacramento and living with his brother. Are these the same man? In Feb of 1910 an Ernest Rolland Harms married Pearl Gabrielle Mander.She was born 9 Jan 1888 and she died 2 Dec 1934 in Los Angeles County. By Dec 1919 They were divorced. 2b) William Melford HARMS born 6 Mar 1857, Hanover Germany.  He died 14 Apr 1912 in California. He married 18 Jan 1884 at the Chicory Ranch in Yolo County, California to Caroline "Carrie" SCHAPER. She was born on 20 Jan 1860 in California. She died on 14 jun 1939 in California. According to California Voters Register: HARMS, William Milfred was 35 years old 5 foot 7 inches tall. He had a Light complexion, Blue eyes, & Brown hair. He was a Farmer born in Germany, he lived in S Washington. William and Carrie had seven children:

They were devorced before 1940.
