EDWARD MORRIS DOSCH

One of the prominent pioneer merchants of Sacramento was the late Edward Morris Dosch, whose death occurred in March, 1897. He was born December 30, 1834, in Hesse-Cassel, Germany, where he was educated by private tutors. His father was a judge. As a young man, Edward M. Dosch came to the United States, arriving in Sacramento just a few hours after New Years in 1850. Soon afterward he went to Ione, Amador county, where he purchased a farm for the purpose of raising fruits and other farm produce. He also conducted a general merchandise store, and was very prominent in the affairs of the sparsely settled county. He was a charter member of the Turnverein, which was organized here in 1854 and he belonged to the Masonic Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, but became affiliated with the Roman Catholic faith before his death. His home in Ione, Amador county, was destroyed by fire in 1869, and he then moved with his family to Sacramento, where he became a bookkeeper at the Southern Pacific Railroad shop.
Edward M. Dosch was married to Catherine Green, who came to the United States from Scotland in 1860. Five children were born to them. Charles Henry Dosch, the first in order of birth, married Gussie Clausinas, and they were the parents of Elsie, who married Carl Sanland of San Francisco, and Carl, who married Ethel English. Mary Emma Dosch, the second child of the family, married J. J. Dunckhorst of Sacramento, and their children were: John Edward, who married Belle Moyer; Paul, who married Blanche Simpson; and Ruth, who married Fred Oehler. Evalinda, third of the line, married H. W. Earle, and by this union was the mother of Ellsworth E., who married Hazel Herbert, and Ethel, who married Albert Liveretto. Harriett, fourth child, married W. J. Coffey, and they were the parents of William E., Robert M., and Edna Sarah. Fred, the fifth and last of the children, married Sophie Harms, and to them were born eight children: John Edward; Fred; Bernice, who married Alfred Anderson; Frank, who married Peggy Sweeney; Evelyn; Ellwood; Dorothy and Melvin.
