Champlin Minni March 5th 71
Dear Brother yours (Feb 26th) came up last Friday. uncle Benny left
Pelatias last Thursday they were going to start for Kansas the next
morning.
Benny expects to go in about three weeks, he did intend to go with
Tias folks and so did Sam Wales but Sam could not get ready and
Benny will wait for him.
we have had a verry mild winter so far and it appears to be over
now, tho it is a most too early to be a sure thing.
you probably heard of the death of John Slough he died in the early
part of the winter.
guess Benny misunderstood us when he reported California as being
sickly. we foune it healthy except some rhuematism where we stoped,
it is said there is a good of ague on the Sacremento river but we
did not stop there. on Humbolt bay where we put in most of out time
it is nearly if not quite as healthy as it is here altho it is verry
damp and foggy mutch of the time.
I expect to stay here the coming summer how mutch longer I don't
know, I like this part of the Country verry well but I like running
about a good deal better.
we did not see the big trees, I saw some red wood logs eight of
nine feet in diameter and John reported some he saw that was fourteen
ft.

Gardner Goldsmith
Gardner Goldsmith, was born in Albany county, New
York, Nov. 16 1812, and relates his history as follows:
The first important event in the journey of life that
I remember was a visit to the "Gramfer" "Gar'ner's" some time in
the 10th month, 1815. Father, mother, my youngest sister and I started
on the fifty mile journey, "over the river." Crossing the Hudson
river at Albany on the "scow" (a flat boat run by horse power) was
so great a curiosity that I remember it as distinctly as if I had
been older.
The spring of 1816, 1 started to school, and soon gained
some distinction as a scholar. I had been duly instructed to obey
the "marm's" orders when I went to "read" that is, when she said
"A" I should say "A," etc. In course of the "reading," something
soon occurred that made the children laugh. The "marm" ordered "silence".
With due importance I repeated the order. That increased the laughter.
Summoning up all her stern authority with a stamp of her foot she
again commanded "silence." I again proved equal to the occasion
with the stamp and command. The laugh had to wear down a little
before order cou1d be restored.
There was a short steep hill in the road near the schoolhouse.
During recess I saw a little girl, the smallest of the crowd except
myself, starting up the hill. My gallantry was up. I started to
take her hand and assist her up. She declined my services. The "youngens"
laughed, but I was more damaged by the "mitten" than the laugh.
We (father and the family) moved to Indiana in 1822,
stopping in Wayne County where the town of Milton was located three
years later. Part of us went to Centerville, (then the county seat,)
the spring of 1828. There was a little newspaper printed there by
John Scott, called the "Western Emporium." About the middle of summer
Scott sold the "Emporium" office to Cyrus Finch and Septimus Smith.
The paper was enlarged and improved and called the "Western Times."
United states mails were very scarce in those parts
at that date. Scott run a private mail of two days travel to carry
his papers to subscribers. Early in the spring I had taken a situation
as mail carrier, and was continued by the new firm. Smith (who had
sole control of the business) and I soon became fast friends. He
invited me to come and work with them. I agreed. The private mail
was discontinued, and I commenced work early in November. I pitched
in to make myself as useful as possible, and by early spring made
a full hand.
Finch died of consumption early in 1829. Smith carried
on the "Times" till the latter part of 1831 and also died of consumption.
The office passed into other hands and I into other offices, as
tramping jour.
When I started to Indianapolis in the winter of 33_4
I left a situation at the Richmond Palladium office, David P Holloway
(father of William R. Holloway, of the Indianapolis Times) editor
and proprietor. The spring of 1834 my brother and I entered land
here, (Fall Creek township, Hamilton county,) built a cabin and
moved in the next fall. I worked in town nearly every winter for
several years. The last I worked at printing was in '45 --17 years
from the first.
My wife and I were married in June 7, 1838. We have
had six sons and six daughters. Two sons and four daughters are
living.
If not "too previous" I will invite the readers of the
JOURNAL to our Semi_Centennial wedding, that is "sot" for June7,
1888.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Hand written note at the bottom says "Written for an old settlers
meeting 1885". It was published in a newspaper I believe to be the
Indianapolis Journal, which is where he worked "in town" for several
winters as a printer. The publisher for part of that time was Samuel
V. B. Noel. His brother, Thomas R. G. Noel (later Gardner's son-in-law),
was also a printer there as a boy and young man.
